I saw this pattern used in conjunction with the Quincunx as part of the "marble carpet" pattern in medieval churches in and around Rome.

The Guiolloche is a "running swirl" that the Cosmati marbleworkers used to form a pathway down the center of the nave to the altar. The pattern was fixed, but the elements within changed color and form.
