I was intrigued by how man can devise any number of ways to decorate a circle. There are no two identical Cosmatesque roundels that I have seen.

This is the basic unit in Cosmatesque design. A round cut of marble, perhaps from a sectioned column - a Roman spoil - surrounded by an intricate series of patterns separated by white bands of marble in circles or spirals.
